THE MATHERLY FAMILY IN CABOOL

My Great, great grandfather Thomas Clelon Matherly (1845-1932) married Marguerite Gabberdt (1847-1943) in Harrodsburg,, KY and moved to Texas County Missouri in 1892. They traveled by oxen drawn wagon and homesteaded on Hog Creek between Cabool and Houston. They later moved to a farm in Seargent located at the end of what is now A.V. Highway just East of Cabool in Texas County. They had  five children, Herbert, Florence Etta (Hahn), Addie (Wofford), my Great Granfather Paul La Vern, and James Cecil. In 1903 they moved to the West end of Main Street to where the Kabul Nursing Home now stands. In 1913 Thomas opened the Cabool Lumber Co. Located at the corner of Main Street and Hwy 181 in Cabool.

Paul La Vern (1885-1976) went to Winona to work for Mr. Hahn (his brother-in-law) in his lumber mill Ozark Land & Lumber. There he met and married Arta Mae Arbogast (1886-1980) daughter of Riley Wilson (1953-1930) and Sarah Elizabeth (Foster) Arbogast (1857-1928). They had two sons, Paul Lester (1910-1968) and my Grandfather Clyde Clelan (1914-2001) In 1917 they moved back to Cabool where he managed the Cabool Lumber Company until 1935 when he founded Matherly Oil Company a Texaco Oil distributorship. Later Vern married Barbara Nall Durbin. They had no children. Vern is buried in the Cabool cemetery. Paul Lester married Marguerite Bay and had one daughter Jo Ann.

In 1935 my Grandfather Clyde married Eva Ruth Woodruff daughter of Delbert and Armita Mae (Smack) Woodruff. Clyde served in the United States Navy from 1943-1945. . Clyde was in the tire business and one time a pool hall. In 1953 he purchased the Matherly Oil Co. From Vern.  Clyde and Eva have two sons, my father Terry Clyde (b.1939) and Tim Riley (b.1943).     

Tim married Sharon Ann Mckinney, daughter of Claude and Ernestine Melton Mckinney in 1962. Tim and Sharon live in Dayton Ohio and have two sons Greg Allen (b.1963) and Roger Blane (b.1967). Greg is married to Laura Kay Firestone and lives in Southern California and Roger is married to Gail and lives in North Carolina. Greg and Kay have a  daughter Lauren and a son Cade. Roger and Gail have two sons Hunter & Weston.

Terry and Beverly have two sons Steven Terry (b. 1962) and Curtis Clyde (b.1964) . Terry and Beverly lived in Independence, MO where he was employed by Texaco after his graduation from the University of Missouri. In 1968 they returned to Cabool where he was employed by Matherly Oil Co. Terry and Beverly purchased Matherly Oil Co. In 1968 and operated it until 1984 when it was sold.. They then operated four convenience stores called Pump n’ Pantry until Terry’s retirement in 2004.

Curtis married Tracy Chambers in 1994 and had two daughters Kara Elise (b.1997) and Alyssa Nicole (b. 1999). Curt and Tracy live in Cabool where Curt is employed by Community Hospices of America and Tracy with Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains.

Steven married Stacy Skeen in 1992 and had a daughter Jillian Paige (b. 1995) and a son Wil Dayton (b. 2001).  We live in Cabool where I am the Broker of Matherly Realty & Property Management and Stacy is the President of the First National Bank of Cabool.
